A customer asked us a question that sounds simple. What is each trainer's strike rate in August, over the last five seasons, for yards with more than five runners, split by class of race?
The System Builder could answer half of it at a time. Every breakdown splits a back-tested system one way — by class, by course, by month — so you could look at one trainer across all the classes, or one class across all the trainers, but never the whole picture at once. The new Grid tab answers it whole: pick what goes down the side, pick what goes across the top, and every cell is the figure for that pair.
What the numbers in the cells are
You choose. Strike rate, A/E, ROI, profit and loss, Percentage of Rivals Beaten, Impact Value, chi-squared, place strike rate, runs or wins. Switching between them redraws the grid straight away without going back to the database, so you can read the same trainers against the market one moment and by raw strike rate the next.
The shading is relative to your own system rather than to some absolute. Blue means that cell is doing better than the system does overall; amber and red mean worse. For A/E and Impact Value the comparison is an even 1.00, and for profit and ROI it is breaking even.
The six hundred trainers nobody could see
This is the part that surprised us. Ask that August question with a floor of six runs and 853 trainers qualify. A single breakdown caps at the 200 busiest groups — so for years the honest answer to that question was quietly leaving more than six hundred yards out, and nothing on screen said so.
The Grid applies the minimum-runs floor to each line's total before the cap, so the cap is spent on lines that already qualify, and the header tells you the true count: “50 of 853”. The same honesty runs through the totals. The All column becomes All shown if there were more columns than fit, and the bottom row reads These 50 rather than All when you are looking at part of the list. A total should never imply it covered everything.
From a cell to a system
Click any cell to see the individual runs behind it. Shift-click it and the Grid adds both rules to your system at once — the trainer and the class — so a cell that catches your eye becomes the next version of the system in one action, ready to re-run. Column headers sort the whole grid, and the whole thing exports to CSV.
