The Going Predictor: Read the Ground Like a Proform
The official going description at your racecourse tells one story. The actual ground tells another. The Going Predictor cuts through that gap by giving you a data-driven verdict on what the turf, all-weather, or jumps track is really riding as — instantly, after the first race.
Why It Matters
Going conditions shape how horses perform. A track officially described as Good can ride softer or firmer than the label suggests, and that difference translates to winning times. The Going Predictor uses historical race data to reverse-engineer the actual going from a single winning time, stripping away class and distance variables to isolate ground effect.
How to Use It
The workflow is straightforward:
- Select your course and distance — the tool loads historical standard times for that track
- Choose race type (Turf, AW, Chase, Hurdle, or NHF) and race class (A through H)
- Enter the winning time in seconds or minutes:seconds format
- Optionally input any rail movement in yards — this adjusts the standard time proportionally
- The tool returns a going verdict based on Proform methodology
The Methodology
The Going Predictor applies the same calculation framework as Proform Speed Figures. It adjusts the standard time for rail movement, calculates how many seconds per mile the actual time ran slower than standard, then normalises for race class — because a Class A race will naturally run faster than a Class G regardless of ground conditions.
The final step maps that differential to a going allowance (GA) value, which translates to your predicted going description.
What to Expect
This is a single-race estimate based on one winning time. For comparison, Proform's official GA uses the top three fastest races from a meeting for greater statistical weight. But run the Going Predictor after race one, and you'll have a clearer picture of the ground than the official card alone can offer.
