64% contraction: Pooley's Promise leads dramatic morning shortening

Seventy-four horses across today's fixtures showed shortened prices between the evening line and the morning of racing on 24 March 2026. The most extreme movement occurred in the mares' hurdle at Taunton, where Pooley's Promise SHORTENED from 8 to 2.88 (64.0% contraction), indicating substantial support in the final hours before the 14:45 race.

The top five price contractions all exceeded 52%, suggesting coordinated backing patterns across multiple fixtures. Victory Shout SHORTENED from 41 to 17 (58.5% contraction) in the 15:15 handicap hurdle at Taunton, whilst Tombereau SHORTENED from 21 to 9 (57.1% contraction) in Southwell's novices' hurdle. Purple Owl and I Was Thinking both recorded contractions above 52% in afternoon races.

Movement concentrated at longer prices

Larger absolute shortening occurred in horses carrying longer odds. Victory Shout's 24-point move from 41 to 17 dwarfed Pooley's Promise's 5.12-point contraction, despite the latter's superior percentage decrease. Saucats SHORTENED from 29 to 15 (48.3% contraction) in the same race as Victory Shout, indicating multiple backed runners in that contest.

Afternoon and evening fixtures featured heaviest traffic

Southwell and Wolverhampton races dominated the shortening data. Wolverhampton's 17:30 handicap produced Kento's 37.5% contraction (6 to 3.75), whilst Southwell's 17:00 novices' hurdle featured Little Big Kev SHORTENED from 15 to 8.5 (43.3% contraction), My Fortune SHORTENED from 9 to 6 (33.3% contraction), and Troop Ship SHORTENED from 17 to 12 (29.4% contraction).

Contractions at the shorter end of the market proved less dramatic. Dr Ali, Musical Soldier, O'Grady's Hill and My Fortune all registered 33.3% to 33.5% reductions despite opening at single-figure odds. Honneur De Sivola and Miss Fedora recorded the smallest percentage moves among the top twenty, at 28.6% and 30.0% respectively.

The data reflects varied market confidence across 74 runners, with the heaviest investment concentrated in horses available at longer starting prices.
